When to prick a child's ears and what are the options

Earrings for baby: When to pierce a child's ears

At the antenatal course I attended, there was a question about the pricking of the ears in babies. We got a tip that a thread is threaded through the baby's freshly pierced ear, which is tied and the thread is then rotated every day before the ear heals. At the thought of me stretching a bloody non-sterile thread every day in a fresh wound in my daughter's ears, plucking out barely dried scabs, all my hairs swelled. That's why this article on what a clean, safe and fresh piercing should look like was created. It applies to both classic piercings and children's ears.

When to prick a baby's earrings - puerperium and vaccination

In the past, they used to inject babies in the maternity ward. Nowadays, they are injected after six months of age at the earliest, but usually waiting for the first vaccination with the hexavaccine. This is a compulsory vaccination that includes, among other things, a vaccine against tetanus and hepatitis B. Of course, no one has to worry about tetanus or hepatitis at Hellas - the instruments we use to prick the ears are sterile and disposable. However, we recommend waiting at least a week after the hexavaccine so as not to put unnecessary stress on the child's body right after the vaccination. We don't insist on vaccinations at Hellas.

3 options where and how to prick the baby earrings

1. Shooting earrings with a nail gun

The earrings are usually shot with a spray gun in a beauty studio or directly in the jewellery shop where you choose the earrings. We are fundamentally opposed to gun shooting for the following reasons:

  • The gun cannot be sterilized. It is only sprayed with disinfection, so it is disinfected, but not sterile.
  • The hole in the ear is pierced directly by the end of the earring. It is pointed, but it is a conical tip, which tissue rather torn and not cleanly pierced as in the case of needle injection. You can see the difference well in the pictures below. Take a look at the great video, where you can see how quickly and cleanly the material pierces the needle against the tips of the shooting earrings.
  • one should also consider how often earrings are pistoled in a cosmetic studio, i.e. what kind of experience they have and how quickly, accurately and also symmetrically they are able to apply the jewelry.
  • The most common argument for shooting is that it is a quick process. True, piercing the ears with a cannula takes a little longer than shooting. After the needle piercing (the puncture itself is as fast as shooting), a piece of jewelry is put into the cannula, which is stretched through the hole and then it is already done. The overall process will be extended by about 30 seconds compared to shooting.

2. Pricking the earrings of the baby through the cannula at the doctor

Parents often decide to have their ears pierced at the doctor. As a paramedic, she is more trustworthy than a beautician or a saleswoman in a jewelry store.

  • The puncture at the doctor is usually done with a disposable sterile cannula or injection needle, although there are also doctors who use a nail gun. In contrast to piercing the ear with the blunt end of the jewelry (see the pictures and video above) when shooting, the needle is very sharp and has a beveled shape, so that the tissue of the auricle pierces quickly and cleanly, without unnecessary tearing.
  • You will bring the earrings with you to the doctor. So it means that you put them in the wounds non-sterile.
  • The shape of the earrings you bring is often not suitable for healing. The lobe will swell after the puncture and at the time of healing it will be helped a lot by the application jewelry, which is slightly longer than the one worn in the healed ear.
  • Even the material of earrings brought by you or just purchased is often not suitable for healing. Gold (yes, not even gold), silver and surgical steel (it contains 4% nickel, which is a common allergen) can irritate fresh holes and complicate healing. Titanium or bioplastic is ideal.
  • As in a jewelry store or in a cosmetic studio, consider here how often the doctor the earrings. Lack of practice cannot be reproached, his work lies in something else. In our experience, punctures from doctors are often not symmetrical or the canal does not go straight through the ear, although of course there are exceptions.

Why we don't use your earrings

  • Earrings brought by you or those just bought in a jewelry store or a beautician are not sterilized. Even loading jewelry into alcohol for as many hours as possible does not equate to reliable sterilizationi. Alcohols (i.e. also alcohol) are not effective against resistant spores of bacteria and fungi.
  • The shape of the earrings you brought or just bought is often not suitable for healing. The lobe will swell after the puncture and at the time of healing it will be helped a lot by the application jewelry, which is slightly longer than the one worn in the healed ear.
  • Even the material of the jewellery or earrings you have just bought in a jewellery shop is often not suitable for healing. Gold (bohuel, allergy to gold is quite common), silver and surgical steel (contains 4% nickel, a common allergen) can irritate fresh holes and complicate healing. Titanium or bioplastic is ideal.

3. Pricking the baby's ears in the piercing studio

We understand that parents do not want to take the baby among tattooed and pierced individuals. But in the end, that's the best they can do for his ears.

  • The puncture is carried out through a disposable sterile cannula. The needle is very sharp and has a beveled shape, so the tissue of the auricle pierces quickly and cleanly, without unnecessary tearing.
  • You will receive application sterile titanium earrings in the shape of a dumbbell. So the baby has earrings in the shape of a ball. These application earrings have been heat sterilised in an autoclave using high temperature and pressure, the same way that surgical instruments are sterilised in a hospital. The earrings are sterile packaged and after opening the packaging, they are only touched with sterile gloves and sterile instruments.
  • The shape, length and material of the earrings are selected so that the ears heal as quickly as possible. The application jewelry is slightly longer to allow the swelling to have enough clearance.
  • After the ears are fully healed, i.e. when the entire length of the puncture is lined with new skin (i.e. in 6 months at the latest), we can remove the application earrings from the bioplastic and put on the "beautiful" earrings in their place. If you don't feel like going to the studio again, no problem, you can easily do the earring replacement at home.
  • You can count on sufficient practice of a piercer or piercer. They do about ten piercings a day, so they have practice and work very quickly and accurately. In Hell, there is also an assistant at the pricking of the children's ears, who entertains the child with a toy (it's a great octopus) while the piercer works.
  • Míla Bugtcher, a piercer who the ears of small babies in Hell, is also trained in acupuncture and knows where significant acupuncture points lie, which should be avoided. You can read Míla's more detailed article about pricking lobes to children on the Painart website.

How to care for freshly pierced ears of a child

Caring for piercings, as well as for the ears, is so simple that people often complicate it to feel that they are taking good care of them. They lubricate the puncture with ointments, disinfect it with strong disinfection. The truth is that caring for freshly pricked ears is simple, you just need to do it regularly. For more than ten years of piercer practice, we know that the salt, that is, saline solution that is inherent in our body, works best.

  • The best choice are products specially designed for the care of fresh piercings, e.g. Prontlind. Prontlind in the form of a spray is available in Hell directly from piercers or at the reception.
  • An alternative is saline solution. Stir a small pinch of table salt into a clean large shot of lukewarm water (0.5 dl). This solution is a reliable and at the same time non-aggressive remedy, and for the care of piercings it is perfect.
  • Do not remove the jewelry from the ear before healing and do not move it in the wound. There is a risk of introducing infection.
  • Around the puncture, yellow scabs will form, which look like drowsy. That's okay. It is a leaking tissue fluid, which is a sign of healing. Gently wipe the scabs with a cotton brush soaked in saline solution when cleaning.
  • Do not lubricate the ears with any ointment. They need to breathe.
  • Do not smear the ears with any disinfection. Disinfectants dry out and tend to burn the new delicate cuticle that forms in the wound.
  • Until the ears are completely healed, i.e. 2 months, skip swimming in the pool with the baby and do not soak the ears in the bath. Of course, a small splash when bathing the baby at home does not matter. (On the Internet from time to time you will come across moms who report that they were with freshly pricked earrings in the pool and nothing happened. Congratulations on the happiness and good immunity of the baby, but we wouldn't really risk this.)

To prick or not to prick

Finally, we offer one more option to consider – this is our favorite. You can wait with earrings and let the child decide to pierce the ears on his own. This will save the little baby two and when he grows up, it can be an interesting experience for the child: for the first time he decides about his own body. Read what our piercers think about it.
