Tattoo artist Lukáš Netopeyr

Lukáš Netopeyr, our freshest Hell artist, brought new styles to the studio. Probably only real enthusiasts know them: ignorant tattoo and single needle tattoo. Let Lukáš explain what this is all about. He also reveals that he dares to tattoo some very unexpected places.

Khen did you first think that you might become a tattoo artist?

I’d say it started in high school. I have a degree in agriculture, where I sat for hours and drew silly things in a notebook. There was a professor of Czech who was quite inspired, so we talked for a long time about the underground, beatniks, the first punks, etc. It kickstarted me to write my own poems, listen to the music, and soon I was riding the waves of rebellion. The first tattoos for the first paycheck, concerts, libraries – and a few years later I’m where I am. It certainly wouldn’t have been possible without a lot of people, but mainly not without my longtime friend and great tattoo artist, who gave me the best possible start. Many thanks to her for that.

How did your style evolve? Did you go through a big transformation as an artist or did you somehow stay loyal to the styles you started with?

In the beginning, I was really into the ignorant tattoo style because it’s a very distinctive style that can express a deep thought in a few crooked lines. Over time, I began to intersperse it with dotwork and primitive blackwork. Then my friends showed me a couple of artists tattooing with a single needle, it was love at first sight. I work with all these styles to this day, but the last one is primary.

Ignorant is something you don’t come across so often on the Czech scene. Could you tell us a little bit about what it is?

Ignorant has its roots in prison tattoos, graffiti and designs from a time when tattoos were not yet mainstream. It is a style where grotesque scenes, caricatures, irony, dry humor are typical, and personal reactions to times and events in the world are often reflected there. Mostly these tattoos are only in black, without colors. Over the years, the pure underground that it was has evolved into an artistic direction in itself.

Great. Similiariy, I would like to ask you about the topic of single needle. From the name, it can be concluded that instead of a set of needles, it is tattooed only by one. Is it so?

Single needle, sometimes also called single needle black and gray, is a style in which the artist uses a system of one to a maximum of three needles. Thanks to this, it is possible to create detailed work even on small areas. In general, single needle tattooes tend to be rather smaller and are characterized by typical monochromatic buzz. It can be said that it is the direct opposite of traditional old-school tattoos, which have chubby lines and are full of colors. I already know that I will stick to the single for a long time and I would like to graft a few elements on it so that people do not get bored by my work.

What motifs do you like to tattoo? Is there a range of things that you especially enjoy?

The motifs for tattoos themselves I take a lot from old cartoons, poetry, illustrations of books, nudities, cults or broken toys for children. I also became interested in prison tattoos, but only in terms of aesthetics. All in black or graywash..

Would you tattoo your customer from head to toes or do you have – like most tattoo artists – some places that you clearly hate or refuse to work with?

Head to toes (laughs) I did heads, fingers and nipples, I have a lot of experiences with it. Face only after a really thorough and long consultation with the client. I also tattoo genitals. I have my own ordering procedure to avoid unwanted clients. Despite how common tattooing is nowadays, this is a very big taboo still. At the same time, at least for me, these are the moments when I laughed the most at the tattoo with the client.

What is your picture of an ideal client?

I like my clients medium rare (laughs) No, seriously. I will always be happiest if people choose from free designs or come up with a great idea that we will work out together.
